A nickel mine in Western Australia wanted to extend the life of shaft sleeves on their mill circuit pumps.
They were using OEM shaft sleeves manufactured from cast iron. These sleeves had to be scrapped after each wear campaign due to severe erosion and corrosion frequently encountered in sites with corrosive flush water. Severe leakage occurred prior to each shut, leading to environmental and safety concerns.
Due to the harsh duty, we suggested using a solid wolfram shaft sleeve, utilising a packed gland low flow stuffing box arrangement. Wolfram is extremely corrosion resistant, with 1300 Vickers hardness, which makes it ideal for this application.
The results were outstanding. The Wolfram shaft sleeves had next to no wear as evident in the scan analysis below. The OEM shaft sleeves needed to be scrapped whereas the 7D sleeves can be reused in many more campaigns to come.
Benefits:
- Greater control of flush water
- Improved packing life
- Reduced safety and environmental hazards of a leaking pump
